Self Defence System

The Self Defence System is a proven method for developing bushfire protection capability on a property that is based on the long practiced principles of dry fire fighting that we learn in forest fire fighting. Dry fire fighting is how we stop the spread of fires in forest or other vegetation without water.

There are 5 steps in the Self Defence System:

♦  plan for a severe bushfire attack

♦  locate NO FLAME zone to include assets

♦  surround with a LOW FLAME zone

♦  stop moving flame well away

♦  stay on site to extinguish unexpected spot fires on and near assets*

[* Assets include people, livestock, pets, buildings and vehicles]

.

The Self Defence System works for properties and townships because it passes the common sense test as follows: It neutralises the damaging threats; the concept is simple, logical  and teachable; it is easy to implement and monitor; it is scientifically valid; it teaches knowledge and skill about fire behaviour and risk management. It generates self reliance and resilience.

We applied it successfully on Black Saturday and saved people, house, vehicles and horses.
