Something to ponder
Here is the problem Bushfires are fearsome, awesome, unexpected, unwanted They can destroy houses and they can kill and injure One day, the bushfire will suddenly come to your property You will not know what to do. You always thought the fire brigade will help you. You will be terrified and will panic. You will be on your own. But, in a severe bushfire attack, the fire agencies will not be able to protect you Your choice is to leave or to stay and self defend, but you now have to make your choice in panic. This reinforces your fear of the bushfire. Here is the proposal Use knowledge to overcome fear, become self reliant and self defend. You can remain in fear of the bushfire or you can arm yourself with the right knowledge and skills and become self reliant. Use knowledge to overcome fear of the bushfire. Use knowledge to make an informed decision about staying or leaving. During the Black Saturday fires, people stayed at 40% of properties and self defended, and the average house destruction rate was 38%. If more properties are self defended, the house survival rate becomes higher. Here is the proof To make an informed choice, consider these long known facts: " If you are able bodied and defend your property, the chance of house survival is 90%+. " If your house is vacant and undefended, there is a 60 - 70%+ chance your house will burn down with all your valuables inside it. When a town is under ember attack and there is no chance of a moving flame through the town, people that remain on site can put out spot fires on their own properties and also their neighbours'. A fire truck can only deal with one house at a time. Look at the 2003 Canberra fire. There were a handful of fire trucks for the whole suburb, but hundreds of houses burnt down because residents were not there. People believed they had been encouraged by emergency services to evacuate. Governments know these facts, but they still want you out of harm's way, perhaps because they believe you do not know enough or are not interested enough to learn. They believe evacuation will save your life. Their overriding goal is to minimise loss of human life, which is a good thing, but there are better ways to meet this goal and to also save houses. Let's consider an analogy. Say the road toll is very high and the government's response is to discourage people from driving, with this logic: if you don't drive on the road, you will not be killed on the road. Does this logic sound familiar? - if you aren't in a bushfire area, you will not die in a bushfire. Back to the road toll, the government does not discourage driving. Instead, it undertakes a series of positive measures to reduce it, such as driver training initiatives, improving vehicle roadworthiness, increasing fines for common causes such as speed and alcohol, removing or upgrading road danger areas, and increasing police activity. We ask: why does the government not broaden its approach within bushfire areas? Here is a solution Arm yourself with the right knowledge and skills, become self reliant and self defend. Why? Bushfires are controllable. You can learn to manage them on your property Something else to ponder Right knowledge is power Red Eagle believes that ignorance of key knowledge and skills generates or perpetuates fear and that the concept of "run and hide" is a symptom of fear and panic. History has shown that fear and ignorance are a barrier to human progress, whereas education and learning lead to freedom and human progress. When people understand that bushfire danger is controllable, they are open to learning new knowledge and skills about how to do it. . We say these knowledge and skills are worth learning, are easy and fun to learn, and will stay with you for life and you can pass them on to your children and grand children. Warning: - Wrong knowledge is dangerous Red Eagle says if you choose to self defend, learn how to do it properly. We say that if you do not learn the right skills and knowledge, please follow government policy and on each bad bushfire weather day, leave each morning for a safe place. Here is some more information. It may help you make an informed decision. Your choices during a severe bushfire attack Compulsory evacuation - your rights House occupation rates vs. house survival rates Facts about black Saturday fires and aftermath The science behind self defence Folly of a mis-quote The alternative The alternative to self defence is to rely on the government, which by its nature governs for the community, not for individuals, and sometimes has confusing policies guided by sometimes confusing assumptions. | |
